Many small textile techniques reguire the even divisions of circles – button making, kanzashi flowers, tassels, temari, embroidery and so on. These tools and gauge make marking out the divisions so much easier than measuring. The tools and the loose gauges have a variety of notches to mark accurate odd or even divisions in a circle. These can be be used to mark button moulds, fabric, and even dimensional objects by pinning the gauge into place.
There are several ways to use the gauges to mark circle divisions, and the tool or the loose gauges can be used. One set is marked with even divisions – 8, 6 and twelve divisions. Of course, the 8 can be used to mark 4 (and the 6 to mark 3!), while the odd set marks not only 5, 7, 9 and 11, there are also halfway marks to increase the divisions to 10, 14 and 18.
